US Biodiesel 2020 Data Released
h^ ďŝŽĚŝĞƐĞů ƉƌŽĚƵĐƟŽŶ͕ ĨĞĞĚƐƚŽĐŬ ĐŽŶƐƵŵƉƟŽŶ͕ ĂŶĚ
trade data from 2020 are now in. During the year of COVID-19,
domestic producers manufactured 1.82 billion gallons of
biodiesel, according to EIA, up from 1.72 billion gallons in
2019, but down from nearly 1.86 billion gallons in 2018. This
ĮŐƵƌĞĞdžĐůƵĚĞƐƌĞŶĞǁĂďůĞĚŝĞƐĞůƉƌŽĚƵĐƟŽŶ͕ďƵƚŚƌŝƐƵĐŬŶĞƌ
with EIA said in November the agency will begin tracking and
publishing renewable diesel data this year.
Feedstocks consumed in 2020 totaled 13.63 billion
pounds, of which 8.38 billion pounds was soybean oil,
ƌĞƉƌĞƐĞŶƟŶŐ ϲϭ͘ϱ ƉĞƌĐĞŶƚ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ĂŶŶƵĂů ĨĞĞĚƐƚŽĐŬ ƐŚĂƌĞ͘
EĞĂƌůLJϭ͘ϱϮďŝůůŝŽŶƉŽƵŶĚƐŽĨĚŝƐƟůůĞƌƐĐŽƌŶŽŝůǁĂƐƵƐĞĚ͕ƚŚĞ
ƐĞĐŽŶĚͲŚŝŐŚĞƐƚƐŚĂƌĞŽĨĨĞĞĚƐƚŽĐŬĨŽƌh^ďŝŽĚŝĞƐĞůƉƌŽĚƵĐƟŽŶ
last year at more than 11 percent. Nearly 1.25 billion pounds of
ĐĂŶŽůĂŽŝůǁĂƐƵƟůŝnjĞĚĨŽƌďŝŽĚŝĞƐĞů͕ŵŽƌĞƚŚĂŶϵƉĞƌĐĞŶƚŽĨĂůů
ĨĞĞĚƐƚŽĐŬƐ͘zĞůůŽǁŐƌĞĂƐĞƵƐĞŝŶϮϬϮϬǁĂƐĚŽǁŶƐŝŐŶŝĮĐĂŶƚůLJ
from previous years as a result of the pandemic, restaurant
closures, and lockdowns, at slightly more than 1.05 billion
pounds, less than 8 percent of total feedstock. By comparison,
nearly 1.45 billion pounds of yellow grease was consumed
in 2019 and almost 1.67 billion pounds was leveraged for
ŵĂŬŝŶŐďŝŽĚŝĞƐĞů ŝŶϮϬϭϴ͘ŚŽŝĐĞǁŚŝƚĞŐƌĞĂƐĞƌĂŶŬĞĚĮŌŚ
among feedstocks for US biodiesel in 2020 at 612 million
pounds, or roughly 4.5 percent of total feedstock, while tallow
ĐŽŶƐƵŵƉƟŽŶǁĂƐϯϲϴŵŝůůŝŽŶƉŽƵŶĚƐ͕ŽƌϮ͘ϳƉĞƌĐĞŶƚ͘͞KƚŚĞƌ
